AMR Specialist - Portland Water District
6 month Probationary rate $23.17 - Regular rate $24.39
Purpose/Customer Impact: This position is responsible for obtaining timely, accurate meter readings used to generate water and wastewater bills. Computer systems will be utilized to run reports and collect, analyze, update, save, retrieve, and process data. Posting disconnection notices is also a job requirement. Contact with customers will be encountered in the course of obtaining meter readings, posting notices, and following up on meter equipment problems or irregular usage. Safe and courteous driving practices are essential.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to: Customer Service Manager Direct Reports: None
Interrelationships: Contact with customers and other Portland Water District (PWD) employees.
Independent Action: Recommendation authority with limited direct supervision.
Job Duties:
- Obtain accurate and timely meter readings by using all available methods, such as: manual reading; mobile collection; touch pad; visual reader; or handheld unit. This includes obtaining initial and final meter readings
- Exhibit safe and courteous driving practices
- Download meters to be read from the billing system into the meter reading device
- Upload unbilled meter readings from the meter reading device into the billing system
- Identify and estimate unread meters
- Analyze data and follow-up on reports that identify possible metering equipment issues such as: high use; low use; zero use and consecutive estimated readings
- Identify and report potential unmetered properties, or other forms of unauthorized use
- Post disconnection notices at tenant properties
- Work cooperatively with other PWD employees, sharing knowledge and ideas
- Perform other related duties as required.
Essential Job Functions: Driving, walking, keying, typing, telephone usage, sitting, twisting, bending, kneeling, reaching, squatting, climbing, lifting (maximum 25 lbs.), clear verbal and written communication, visual and hearing accuracy.

- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Possess a valid State of Maine driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Overall alpha/numeric data entry score of “good” or better
- Beginner or higher rating in PC Introduction, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Must be able to perform basic math functions
- Ability to present ideas and information clearly, and remain calm in emergency situations
- Must be self-motivated, with ability to work without direct supervision
- Must present a neat appearance to promote a professional image of PWD
- Ability to organize, prioritize, analyze, problem solve and perform in a multi-tasking environment where interruptions are frequent
- Familiarity with PWD service territory is a plus
