Portland Water District Summer Job Opportunity– Watershed Protection Specialist - Temporary Position $19.00 an Hour

Reports to: Source Protection Coordinator. May periodically receive direction from the Chief of Security Operations, Water Resources Specialists, and the Environmental Manager.

Direct Reports: None

Interrelationships: Daily contact with Lake Office staff, lake visitors, and watershed and service area residents.    

Independent Action: Carry out environmental sampling and analysis programs. environmental site inspections. Develop and prepare outreach and education resources and participate in related initiatives and development of materials. Interact with the public to educate them about source protection principles. Perform administrative tasks as assigned.

Essential Accountabilities:

  • Prepare for and carry out watershed sampling programs. 
  • Perform routine laboratory analysis of water samples with limited supervision.
  • Implement and perform all established QC related and safety related components of laboratory analyses in accordance with standard methods and laboratory certification requirements.  Calibrate laboratory instruments during analyses as required by the method.
  • Complete and maintain accurate, neat, and precise written and database records of work.
  • Perform basic GIS related tasks associated with Environmental Services projects.
  • Conduct inspections of watershed properties for identification of potential water quality concerns.
  • Interact with members of the public to educate and inform them about source protection topics.
  • Participate in the development and preparation of the source protection, environmental outreach, and classroom education materials and resources
  • Represent the District in a professional and courteous manner. 
  • Conduct routine security patrols in the watershed and other surveillance duties as assigned.
  • Take on additional tasks as required by special projects, etc. initiated by the Lake Office staff.   
  • Take initiative to meet or exceed quality standards and commit to assist in helping to meet the goals established by Environmental Services.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Essential Job Functions:  Standing, sitting, walking, driving, kneeling, crawling, squatting, twisting, bending, reaching, climbing, visual accuracy, clear verbal and written communication, lifting (max 30lbs)

Minimum Requirements: An individual must be able to perform Essential Job Functions and Accountabilities satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Graduation from an accredited high school.  Minimum two years of college coursework in environmental science or related field.
  • Coursework involving work in an environmental laboratory preferred.
  • Knowledge of erosion and sedimentation control principles preferred.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Experience interacting with the general public. 
  • Possess a valid State of Maine Driver’s License, with a clean driving record, reliable transportation and appropriate insurance status.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out sampling programs, properly collect water samples, and conduct laboratory analyses. 
  • Ability to record test results and maintain accurate records.
  • Competence using Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet and database software.   Experience with GIS software preferred.
  • Ability to meet applicable physical and medical standards.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Possess a strong commitment to share information and knowledge, including the ability to function in a team environment.
